Five ways surveillance cameras reduce crime

The use of surveillance cameras is growing each year as business and home owners try to keep their property and people safe.  Burglary is one of the most common crimes reported to Police and the use of CCTV cameras can be an effective way to prevent intruders.

Use of CCTV can also help to improve overall security and reduce costs for customers.  But it needs to be used correctly and to achieve the most benefits should really be implemented as part of a complete security strategy.

Improvements in technology over the years have improved the effectiveness of CCTV, the picture and sound quality has improved and the ability to remotely monitor footage as it happens has significantly helped reduce crime.

1. A deterrent
CCTV cameras can act as a deterrent to many potential thieves.  They don’t want to get caught so if they can see a camera or a sign warning of their presence that could be all it takes to make them look elsewhere.

2. Remote monitoring
When surveillance cameras are being monitored by a professional security company, they will be able to raise the alarm if they see anyone acting suspiciously.  A rapid response security team can be sent to the site and police can be contacted.  By monitoring a site rather than reviewing footage after an incident you may be able to prevent it happening, or at least reduce the damage.

3. Protect staff
If staff work shifts, late nights or on their own, security cameras can provide an extra level of security reducing harassment and violence.  This can be particularly effective if the CCTV is monitored.

4. Reduce employee crime
It’s the last thing anyone wants to think about but it does happen.  There can be temptation to help themselves to stock or take money from the till, and if you suspect this is happening the last thing you want to do is accuse the wrong person!  It is important to remember though that staff need to be made aware of any cameras being used.

5. Provide evidence
Surveillance cameras gather intelligence that can be used to identify and convict people who shouldn’t be on your property and help to recover any stolen goods.
